When you donate a vehicle, the amount you can deduct on your taxes depends on how the vehicle is used by the charity:
- If we give your donated vehicle directly to someone in need as part of our charitable mission, you may be eligible to deduct the fair market value of the vehicle. In this case, we will provide a written acknowledgment within 30 days of your donation. This document will certify:
- How we intend to use the vehicle and for how long, or describe any material improvements to be made;
- That the vehicle will not be sold, exchanged, or transferred for money, property, or services before the completion of its intended use or improvements.
- If we sell your donated vehicle instead of using it directly, your deduction is limited to the gross sale price—even if the fair market value is higher. We will send you a written tax receipt within 30 days of the sale, showing the exact amount the vehicle sold for.
Per IRS guidelines, it is the donor’s responsibility to determine the fair market value—the price a willing buyer and seller would agree to without pressure. Tools like Kelley Blue Book (using the private party value) can help guide your estimate.
If you claim a deduction over $5,000, a qualified independent appraisal is required. Our team is available to help you with questions about appraisals or any part of the donation process.
